Box Score MISENHEIMER, N.C. - The Lander men's soccer team stretched Lee Squires' first year as the Bearcat head coach all the way to the NCAA Tournament, but, unfortunately, the run ended in Friday night's Southeast Region first-round game when fourth-seeded Lander fell to fifth-seeded Wingate in a shootout.
The two teams battled to a 1-1 tie in regulation, then neither team scored throughout the two, 10-minute overtime periods. While the game will go down as a tie, the Bulldogs outscored Lander, 5-3, in the shootout. Lander's Russell Parker, Robert Seaton and Richard Byran found the back of the net on their penalty kicks. All five of Wingate's players were successful in the shootout.
Wingate (14-3-4) advances to Sunday's regional championship game against unbeaten and No. 1-ranked Pfeiffer at 1 p.m. Lander ends the season at 14-3-2.
The No. 22-ranked Bearcats took a 1-0 lead at 11:31 when Michael Leach fired in a shot to bottom right of the goal off an assist from Jamie North.
Wingate knotted the match at 1-all at 69:45 after Charlie Machell took a Jon Ander pass and scored.
The Bulldogs outshot Lander, 15-9, while Lander held a 5-6 edge in corner kicks.
Bearcat goalkeeper Barrett Nielsen tallied five saves, while Wingate's Pablo Jara had three.
