No. 8 Lander baseball splits with North Georgia

DAHLONEGA, Ga. - The No. 8-ranked Lander baseball team saw its six-game win streak come to an end Saturday afternoon when the Bearcats lost the first half of a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader, 6-4, at North Georgia. Lander won the second game, 5-3.

Lander moves to 15-2 overall and 6-2 in the PBC, while North Georgia is 9-5, 1-1. The final game of the three-game series is at 1 pm. Sunday.

In the first game, Lander's Cam Hokanson (0-1) took the loss with two earned runs on one hit.

North Georgia's Brandon Agar (4-0) was awarded the win after striking out six, walking three and allowing four earned runs on 10 hits in seven innings.

Lander took a 4-0 lead in the second inning on a two-RBI single by Patrick Grady that plated Thomas Bess and Aaron Poole, and RBI singles by Poole and Bess that scored Thomas Berry and Weston Lawing.

North Georgia trimmed the lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the inning on an RBI double by Kevin Krupp.

The Nighthawks made it 4-3 in the fifth when Beau Welborn's RBI double drove in Krupp and Travis Naraine.

North Georgia took a 6-4 advantage in the sixth when Toorie's two-RBI double pushed Welborn and Krupp across the plate, then Toorie scored from third on a balk.

For Lander, Erik Lunde went 3-for-4, Lawing 3-for-5 and Graham Ramos 2-for-4.

For North Georgia, Welborn and Toorie both had two hits.

In the second game, Lander's Taylor Alvarez (4-1) picked up the win with three strikeouts and three earned runs on nine hits in five innings.

North Georgia's Clint Spratlin (1-1) took the loss with two strikeouts, two walks and two earned runs on five hits in three innings.

The Bearcat jumped out to a 2-0 first-inning lead when Grady went home on a Lawing fielder's choice, and Berry advanced when Austin Dunn was hit by a pitch.

North Georgia tied it at 2-all in the bottom of the inning on Eason Spivey's RBI single and Andrew Gordon's fielder's choice.

Lander regained the lead at 4-2 with one run each in the second and fourth innings. Bess scored on Lewis' RBI groundout in the second, and Berry's RBI single drove in Lunde in the fourth.

After North Georgia scored one run in the bottom of the fourth on Welborn's RBI single, Lander finalized the scoring in the sixth when Ramos drove in Grady.

For Lander, Grady batted 4-for-4 and Ramos 3-for-4.
