Box Score GREENWOOD – JR Washington scored 16 points as the Lander Bearcats improved to 3-0 with a 76-66 non-conference men's basketball victory over Brewton-Parker College Tuesday night at Horne Arena.
Tobiasz Hose added 13 points and paced Lander with nine rebounds. Shavanno Cooper added 11 points, eight rebounds and two blocked shots for the Bearcats. Mike Lee scored 11 points and Kiair Crouch led Lander with four assists.
McKell Miller and Kenny Cunningham led the Barons (5-3) with 11 points apiece while Warren LeBeauf added 10 points. Justin Quarterman paced Brewton-Parker with four assists and four steals.
The Bearcats made 26 of 62 shots from the floor (42 percent), 18 of 29 free throws (62 percent) and six of 18 from 3-point range (33 percent) while outrebounding Brewton-Parker 42-30.
The Barons hit 23 of 52 shots (44 percent), 12 of 15 free throws (80 percent) and eight of 22 from behind the arc (36 percent).
The Bearcats had 35 points off turnovers to 14 for Brewton-Parker.
Trailing 4-0, Lander went on an 18-3 run to take an 18-7 lead. Washington had a pair of 3s, Hose had also had a 3, then Hose got a steal and fed Asger Hjorth for the first basket of his college career: a slam dunk.
Hose's put-back gave the Bearcats 13 unanswered points, making it 13-4 just inside the 14-minute mark. Hjorth scored inside again, Lee made a free throw, and Cooper added a layup to complete the 18-3 run.
Cunningham and Antwoin Conerly made consecutive 3s to pull the Barons within 20-15 at the nine-minute mark. Lander responded with the game's next seven points on Washington's free throws, Crouch's 3, and Cooper's basket for a 27-15 lead with 7:30 to go.
Brewton-Parker closed within 32-28 on Cameron Bokenham's 3-pointer with 3:20 left. But baskets by Scott Elder and Ricardo Martin helped push Lander's lead to 38-29 at halftime.
Washington's third 3 of the night gave the Bearcats their largest lead of the game at 13 points, 44-31, with 17:39 to go.
Deion Bernard's put-back pulled the Barons within 46-40 with 14:47 left. But Crouch hit two free throws to push Lander's lead back into double figures at 55-45 at the nine-minute mark.
After Lee converted a three-point play to give the Bearcats a 58-48 with 7:49 left, Miller hit a 3 to pull Brewton-Parker within 58-53 with 7:28 to go.
Lander scored seven unanswered to build its lead to 65-53 on Lee's 3, Cooper's dunk off a pass from Washington, and Lee's fast-break basket off Cooper's steal.
But the pattern persisted with the Bearcats building a double-digit lead and Brewton-Parker cutting it back down. Miller's free throw pulled the Barons within 67-62 with 4:21 to go.
But on consecutive possessions, Washington hit two free throws and made a layup, and Martin added a long jumper as Lander built its lead back up to 73-62 with 2:42 left. Lander was not threatened again.
