Box Score AUGUSTA, Ga. - Three Lander volleyball players had double figures in kills Tuesday night to lead the sixth-seeded Bearcats to a 3-2 upset over third-seeded GRU Augusta in the quarterfinal round of the Peach Belt Conference Tournament at Christenberry Fieldhouse. Lander claimed the victory, 25-18, 21-25, 25-18, 23-25, 15-10.
Lander, which improves to 22-9 overall, advances to this weekend's semifinal round at top-seeded Armstrong State in Savannah, Ga. Lander will face seventh-seeded Flagler, a 3-1 upset-winner over No. 2 USC Aiken. Lander's 22 victories is the most since the 2008 Bearcats finished 22-12.
The semifinal matches will be played at 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., Friday, with the championship game at 2 p.m., Saturday. The tournament winner earns an automatic berth into the the Southeast Regional Tournament.
GRU, which defeated Lander by 3-2 scores in both meetings during the regular season, drops to 26-8 overall. Augusta is ranked No. 4 in the latest Southeast Region Poll, while Lander is No. 8.
The Bearcats' Kendall Korte and Jessica Register both had double doubles to lead Lander. Korte had a team-high 16 kills and 13 digs, while Register posted 43 assists and 20 digs. Sydney Tracy added 14 kills, Tarryn Angermeier 10 kills, Julia Ferreira-Alves 26 digs, Kaitlyn Harrison 14 digs and Sarah Bradley 12 digs. Reyonia Whipple chipped in two solo blocks and seven block assists.
The Jaguars were led by Kailla Baptiste (15 kills), Maggie Darling (13 kills, 15 digs), Sadie Thurston (38 assists, 14 digs), Alyssa Latham (14 assists), Kristen Koch (nine kills, 24 digs), and Kali Boatwright (nine kills, 14 digs).
