Armstrong pulls away from cold-shooting Lady Bearcats

GREENWOOD – Tyler Carlson led five double-figure scorers with 18 points as Armstrong Atlantic State used a 26-6 run in the first half and pulled away from Lander 75-47 in a Peach Belt Conference women's game Wednesday night at Horne Arena.

The Pirates improved to 7-4 overall and 2-3 in the Peach Belt. Lander fell to 7-7, 2-3.

While Carlson led all scorers with her 18 points, Amber Howell and Dee Hayward added 12 points apiece for Armstrong Atlantic. Bryonna Davis scored 11 points while leading the Pirates with seven rebounds and seven assists. Brigitta Barta was Armstrong Atlantic's fifth double figure scorer with 10 points.

Alexis Armstrong led the Lady Bearcats with 11 points and nine rebounds, falling just short of her eighth double-double of the season. Jamelia James added 10 points and led Lander with three assists. Alyssia Watkins contributed eight points and seven rebounds for the Lady Bearcats.

Lander committed 24 turnovers but out-rebounded the visitors 45-44.

The Lady Bearcats made only 16 of 65 shots from the floor (25 percent), 10 of 13 free throws (77 percent) and just five of 27 attempts from 3-point range (19 percent).

Armstrong Atlantic hit 28 of 62 shots (45 percent), nine of 16 free throws (56 percent) and 10 of 25 from behind the arc (40 percent).

After trailing 9-2, the Lady Bearcats outscored Armstrong 8-2 to pull within 11-10 with 14:43 left in the first half. James hit a 3-pointer off a steal by Ty'hesha Reynolds, Ashleigh Zandi got a steal and fast-break layup, and Zandi knocked down a 3.

But the Pirates blew the game open with a 26-6 run over the next 11 minutes. Howell scored eight points during the run, Carlson and Davis each hit a pair of 3s, and Barta scored twice. The second of Carlson's 3s gave Armstrong a 37-16 lead with 2:03 left in the half.

Lander scored the final seven points of the half and trailed 37-23 at the break. Armstrong made a 3 and put back Ariel Parker's missed 3, then Zaneta Kubicka closed the half with the first points of her college career when she hit two free throws.

The Lady Bearcats got as close as 13, 43-30, with 17:28 left when James hit a 3. But Armstrong went on a 12-2 run to pull ahead 55-32 at the 14-minute mark, with Mauri Wells starting the run with a 3 and an inside basket, Davis made a jump shot, Barta completed a three-point play, and Carlson hit a layup.

The Pirates still led by 23 points, 59-36, when Lander scored six unanswered points on Sakezia Kelly's 3, an Armstrong free throw, and a Watkins layup. The Watkins basket made it 59-42 with 8:35 left and would be Lander's final field goal of the night. The final five Lady Bearcats points came at the free throw line.

Hayward made 3-pointers on consecutive possessions, extending Armstrong's advantage to 71-43 at the 5:10 mark, and she also scored the team's last two baskets.
