UNCP Braves knock Lander out of Peach Belt Tournament

GREENWOOD - UNC Pembroke junior Daniel Fraga finished 3-for-6 at the plate with a double and drove in five runs and sophomore Ben Schmucker provided a two-run homer to lead the fifth-seeded Braves to a 16-11 win over host Lander in the 2013 Peach Belt Conference Baseball Tournament Friday at Dolny Stadium.

UNC Pembroke (38-15) advances to face No. 7 seed Georgia College later Friday night. UNC Pembroke, ranked No. 16 in the latest Collegiate Baseball Newspaper NCAA Division II poll, must defeat the undefeated Bobcats twice to advance to the tournament championship game. A loss against Georgia College would eliminate the Braves from the tournament.

The loss eliminated the fourth-seeded Bearcats (35-16), who are ranked No. 14 nationally, from the tournament.

Schmucker finished 3-for-4 at the plate with the three-run shot for the Braves. Jordan Edgerton, who drove in one run and scored one run, went 3-for-6 at the dish. Brett Huffman, Drew Cole and Max Gagnon finished with two hits each.

Patrick McMahon (5-0) picked up the win on the mound after pitching 4 1/3 scoreless innings in relief while striking out four and allowing just one hit.

Chris Hyatt led the Bearcats offensively as he finished 2-for-5 at the plate with a pair of doubles while driving in three runs. Graham Ramos, who drove in three runs and scored two runs, went 2-for-3 at the plate with a double. Jeff May and Weston Lawing also finished with two hits.

Kyle Tate (2-3) took the loss after giving up six earned runs on seven hits in 2 1/3 innings in relief.

UNC Pembroke took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Edgerton scored on a RBI sacrifice fly to center field by Brett Huffman.

The Bearcats took a 4-1 lead after plating four runs in the bottom half of the frame, which included a two-run double down the right-field line by Chris Hyatt.

The Braves responded with five runs in the top of the third inning to take a 6-4 lead. UNC Pembroke plated a pair of runs on a two-run double down the left-field line by Fraga in the inning.

The Bearcats trimmed the deficit to 6-5 in the bottom of the third inning following a leadoff solo homer over the fence in right field by Connor Lewis.

Lander scored three more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 8-6 lead. The Bearcats took the lead on a two-run double to right-center field by Ramos, who scored later in the inning on a RBI single by Patrick Grady.

UNC Pembroke took a 9-8 lead with three runs in the top of the fifth inning. Huffman led off the inning with a single before scoring on a two-run blast by Schmucker that cleared the scoreboard in right field.

Lander regained the lead at 11-9 lead with three runs in the bottom half of the frame, which included a RBI double to right-center field by Hyatt.

The Braves plated four runs in the top of the sixth inning, which gave UNC Pembroke a 13-11 advantage. Schmucker provided the highlight in the inning with a two-run double to right-center field.

UNC Pembroke pushed its lead to 16-11 with three runs in the top of the eighth inning following RBI singles by Gagnon, Edgerton and Huffman in the inning.
