Box Score GREENWOOD – The No. 10 Lander baseball team erupted for three runs in the eighth inning Tuesday evening and defeated Carson-Newman, 6-3, in a non-conference game at Dolny Stadium.
Lander improves to 33-12 overall, while Carson-Newman slipped to 22-27.
The Bearcats broke the 3-3 tie when Weston Lawing's RBI single plated Patrick Grady, then added two insurance runs on Austin Dunn's RBI double that scored Lawing and Jeff May.
Jeremy Jansen (4-0) picked up the win in relief for Lander, walking one and allowing just one hit in 1.1 innings pitched.
The Eagles' Lucas Watson (0-1) took the loss after striking out one, walking one and allowing two earned runs on one hit in 1.1 innings.
Peter Rajkovich gave Carson-Newman a 1-0 lead in the third inning when his RBI double to right field plated Gooch Greer.
Lander tied the game at 1-all in the fourth after May drove in Graham Ramos with a single to right field.
With bases loaded and no outs in the sixth, Lander forced two outs before Bryan Everhart's two-run double to left field plated Brandon Roberts and Joe Tipton and gave Carson-Newman a 3-1 advantage.
Erik Lunde helped Lander cut the lead to 3-2 with a leadoff home run to left field in the sixth.
With bases loaded and one out in the seventh, Lander tied the game at 3-3 on Lunde's ground out that scored Lawing.
For Lander, Colby Painter batted 2-for-3, while Lunde and Lawing each went 2-for-4.
For Carson-Newman, Zach Long batted 3-for-4.
