Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

GREENWOOD – After losing a heart-breaker in Game 1, the second-ranked Lander Bearcats scored a school record 13 runs in the third inning of Game 2 en route to a 13-3 victory and Peach Belt Conference double-header split Saturday against Georgia Southwestern. The Hurricanes won the opener at Dolny Stadium, 3-2.

Lander, which beat Georgia Southwestern 1-0 behind Dylan Wolchick on Friday, won the three-game series two games to one.

The Bearcats are 27-6 overall and 17-4 in the Peach Belt. The Hurricanes are 12-22, 3-14.

Georgia Southwestern won Saturday's opener on the strength of three sacrifice flies and a game-saving play by shortstop John Duran in the bottom of the ninth. But Lander blew the game open after falling behind 3-0 in Game 2.

The Hurricanes took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning of Game 2 when Duran reached on an error, moved to third on an errant pickoff throw, and scored on Randall Sheffield's single to right.

Kevin Manos and Duran had RBI singles in the second, giving Georgia Southwestern a 3-0 lead.

But Lander exploded for 13 runs on 10 hits, four walks and a hit batsman in the bottom of the third when the Bearcats sent 18 batters to the plate. Weston Lawing had a two-run single and another run-scoring hit in the inning, Jeff May, Austin Dunn and Adam Davey had RBI singles, Erik Lunde smacked a two-run single, and Connor Lewis had an RBI single. All 10 hits were singles.

Lunde, Grady, Lewis and Dunn each scored twice in the inning as Lander broke its previous school record of 12 runs in an inning set Feb. 24, 2013, in a 15-0 victory over Young Harris, and April 11, 1999, in a 29-19 win over Francis Marion.

The rally gave the Bearcats a 13-3 lead and the score did not change the rest of the way. They only had two more hits after the third, a double by Grady in the seventh and a single by Ryan McNulty in the eighth.

Lander starter Chess Malone (7-1) cruised to the victory, allowing three runs, two earned, on eight hits in seven innings. He struck out six and walked one. Johnny Walker pitched the eighth and Jeremy Jansen worked the ninth.

Leading hitters for the Bearcats in Game 2 were Graham Ramos, Lunde, Lawing and Dunn with two hits apiece.

Sheffield and Chase Young had two hits apiece to lead the Hurricanes in Game 2.

Georgia Southwestern took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning of Game 1 when Les Cromer doubled into the left field corner and scored on Michel Coffey's sacrifice fly.

The Bearcats tied it in the fourth when Lunde singled, moved to second on a wild pitch, and scored on Lawing's RBI single. Lawing had driven in Lander's only run in a 1-0 victory on Friday and also made a game-saving catch when he collided with the left-field fence to end Friday's game.

The Hurricanes took a 2-1 lead in the top of the sixth when Sheffield singled to right, stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a sacrifice fly to deep left center by Kyle Nobles.

Lawing came through again in the bottom of the sixth with yet another game-tying RBI. Grady hit a leadoff double, moved to third on Lewis's ground out to first, and scored on Lawing's high chopping ground out to third.

Georgia Southwestern regained the lead in the top of the ninth with another sacrifice fly. Nobles doubled to left, moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored on Cromer's sacrifice fly to left.

The Bearcats had a big scoring chance in the bottom of the ninth after May and Jacob Tisdale hit back-to-back one-out singles. Pinch runners Aaron Poole and McNulty moved to second and third on Davey's hard ground out to first. With the game on the line, Lander second baseman Ramos hit a grounder up the middle. Hurricanes shortstop Duran ranged behind second to field a ball that looked like it might go into the outfield, righted himself and threw a strike to first, beating Ramos by a step to end the game in spectacular fashion. Had the ball gone into the outfield, both base runners would have scored and Lander would have won the game.

Drew Cataldo (1-1) was the winning pitcher in relief for Georgia Southwestern. Bray Bishop relieved Cataldo in the ninth after May and Tisdale reached, and got the final two outs for his second save of the season.

Kyle Tate (1-1) took the loss in relief for the Bearcats, allowing two runs on three hits in four innings. He struck out three and walked one. Lander starter Cam Hokanson allowed one unearned run on five hits in five innings, also striking out three and walking one.

Hurricanes starter Justin Lott gave up two runs, one earned, on six hits in 5.2 innings, striking out six and walking one before being relieved by Cataldo.

Grady and Tisdale each had a double and single to lead the Bearcats in Game 1, while Lawing had two RBI.

Josh Sanders was Georgia Southwestern's leading hitter in the opener, going 2-for-3.
