Box Score GREENWOOD – The No. 2-ranked Lander baseball team exploded for five runs in the sixth inning Tuesday night en route to an 8-3 non-conference victory over rival Erskine College at Dolny Stadium.
Lander, which has won six straight games, improves to 22-4 overall, while Erskine slips to 18-10.
The Bearcats' Tyler Broome (3-0) earned the win after striking out one, walking one and giving up just one hit in 1.1 innings. Five Lander pitchers held Erskine to five hits.
Erskine's Alex Rhodes (0-2) suffered the loss, striking out two, walking one and allowing five runs on four hits in two innings pitched.
Erskine took a 1-0 lead in the second after Logan Galliher doubled to right centerfield, advanced to third on a groundout, and scored on a Lander fielding error.
Lander came back in the bottom of the inning to take a 2-1 lead when Jeff May drove in Colby Painter with a double to right centerfield, then May scored on Ian Harvey's RBI single.
Harvey gave the Bearcats a 3-1 lead in the fourth when he drove May in with a double to right field.
The Flying Fleet tied the game at 3-all in the fifth after Drew Willingham's RBI single plated Hanlon Maivelett, then Chase Corn scored from third on a pick off at first.
Lander exploded for five runs – all with two outs --in the sixth to take an 8-3 lead. Graham Ramos' double to left field plated May, Chris Hyatt's run-scoring double sent Harvey and Ramos home, Patrick Grady's RBI single drove in Hyatt, and Weston Lawing's single scored Grady.
For Lander, which totaled 12 hits, Grady, May, Aaron Poole, and Harvey batted 2-for-4, while Hyatt went 2-for-5.
