Box Score NEWBERRY – The No. 5-ranked Lander baseball team held off a pesky Newberry squad Wednesday night to claim a 7-4 non-conference victory at the Smith Road Complex.
The Bearcats improve to 18-4, while Newberry drops to 14-11.
Lander's Tyler Broome (2-0) earned the win after striking out one, and allowing two earned runs on four hits in 1.2 innings pitched.
Newberry's Brandon Ahrens (3-1) suffered his first loss of the season after striking out one, walking one and allowing one earned run on four hits in 4.2 innings.
Lander took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on Patrick Grady's RBI single, but Newberry came back in the bottom half to take a 2-1 lead on Albert Baur's run-scoring single and Eric Barbieri's groundout.
The Bearcats bounced back in the fifth inning to take a 3-2 advantage on Chris Hyatt's two-RBI single that plated Aaron Poole and Colby Painter.
Lander made it 5-2 in the sixth on RBI singles by Painter and Poole that scored Connor Lewis and Painter.
The Wolves cut the lead to 5-4 in the sixth when Ryan Cranmer scored on a throwing error and Alex Kirby drove in Baur.
The Bearcats added their final two runs in the ninth on Lewis' two-RBI double.
For Lander, Hyatt batted 3-for-5, Graham Ramos 2-for-4 and Lewis 2-for-5.
For Newberry, Baur and Chas Goodwin both batted 2-for-4.
