Box Score 2 GREENWOOD - Lander tied a school record for most runs in an inning, Jacob Tisdale homered twice, Connor Lewis had a grand slam, and Ian Harvey hit for the cycle as the No. 8 Bearcats swept a Peach Belt Conference double-header against Young Harris College Sunday afternoon at Dolny Stadium. Chess Malone and Logan Pemberton excelled on the mound as Lander won the opener 11-4 and the second game 15-0.
The Bearcats swept the three-game series, improving to 12-2 overall and staying unbeaten in the PBC at 6-0. The Mountain Lions fell to 6-5, 0-3.
Lander tied its school record for runs in an inning with 12 in the top of the second of Game 2. The Bearcats were aided by three hit batsmen, a walk and three errors in the inning. Harvey drove in five runs in the inning, belting a three-run homer and two run double. Weston Lawing had a three-run double and Jeff May added an RBI single during the rally.
Lander's previous 12-run inning was against Francis Marion on April 11, 1999, a game won by the then Senators 29-19.
There were no more runs until the bottom of the sixth of Game 2 when May belted a solo homer over the left-field fence, making it 13-0. Later in the inning, Harvey completed the cycle with a single. He already had a double, triple and homer, and finished 4-for-4 with two runs and five RBI.
The Bearcats upped their lead to 15-0 in the eighth when Adam Davey reached on a three-base error when the right fielder dropped his fly ball, and Colby Painter followed with a two-run homer. It was his third homer of the season, all this week.
Pemberton (4-0) had another strong outing, becoming Lander's first four-game winner. He tossed five shutout innings, allowing no runs on five hits while walking two and striking out eight. Pemberton entered the game with an 0.44 ERA and lowered that with five scoreless innings. In 25.2 innings this season, he has 35 strikeouts and seven walks.
Johnny Walker, Brantley Blalock, Jay Robinson and Nate Bridges each pitched an inning of scoreless relief for the Bearcats to complete the shutout.
Miles Nagel, Cody Beck, James Mills, William Leatherwood, Donald Frew and Travis Donahoo all pitched for Young Harris.
In Game 1, Young Harris took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Trey Rogers homered over the left-field fence.
Lander took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the first on Painter's bases-loaded two-out two-RBI single. The Bearcats would not trail again the rest of the afternoon.
Lander increased its lead to 5-1 in the second when Tisdale was hit by a pitch, Graham Ramos singled, Erik Lunde hit a two-run double, and Patrick Grady added a run-scoring single.
Tisdale led off the Lander fourth with a home run over the Dolny Stadium emblem in right field for a 6-1 lead.
The Mountains Lions pulled within 6-2 in the top of the sixth when Adam Moore was hit by a pitch, stole second, moved to third on a ground out, and scored on David Atwood's grounder to third.
But Tisdale immediately got that run back with a leadoff homer to right center in the bottom of the sixth, making it 7-2.
Young Harris pulled within 7-4 with two runs in the top of the eighth. Jack Morrow legged out a double, Moore hit an RBI triple, and Dom Wyshinski added an RBI ground out.
The Bearcats blew the game open in the bottom of the eighth, loading the bases on two errors and a walk ahead of a grand slam over the right center field fence by Lewis, his second homer of the series.
After eight solid innings by Lander starting pitcher Malone, Jeremy Jansen pitched a scoreless ninth to close the game out.
Malone (3-0) pitched eight solid innings, allowing four runs on seven hits. He struck out six and walked one.
Moore (2-1) took the Game 1 loss for Young Harris, allowing seven runs on 11 hits in seven innings of work, walking one and striking out five. Bruce Merritt and Oliver Pratt followed Moore on the mound.
Ramos, Grady, Lewis, Painter and Tisdale had two hits apiece in the opener for Lander. Lewis had four RBI for the second straight game, while Tisdale, Painter and Lunde had two RBI apiece. Tisdale scored three runs while Ramos, Grady and Lewis scored two runs apiece.
Rogers and Morrow had two hits apiece for Young Harris in Game 1.
