Box Score GREENWOOD – Lander's Colby Painter smacked a two-run homer over the right field wall in the 10th inning Wednesday night to give the No. 8 ranked Bearcats a come-from-behind 12-10 non-conference victory over Newberry in a non-conference game at Dolny Stadium.
Lander improves to 9-2 overall, while Newberry slips to 7-6.
Trailing 10-8, the Bearcats forced the extra inning on Austin Dunn's two-RBI single in the ninth that scored Jeff May and Weston Lawing. With bases loaded and one out, Newberry first baseman Albert Baur threw a force out at the plate and Patrick Grady flied out to end the inning.
Jeremy Jansen (1-0) was awarded the win for the Bearcats after striking out one, walking one and allowing one hit in one inning pitched.
Newberry's Matt Chapman (0-1) took the loss after walking two and allowing two runs , one earned, on one hit in one inning pitched.
Newberry took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on Baur's two-run homer over the right field wall.
The Bearcats evened the score at 2-all on Erik Lunde's two-run shot which landed in almost the same spot as Baur's.
Newberry regained the lead at 4-2 in the second when Chas Goodwin's RBI single plated Jermale Paige and Goodwin later scored on Anthony Siler's sacrifice fly.
Lander trimmed the lead to 4-3 in the fourth after Chris Hyatt singled and later scored on a Newberry fielding error.
In the next two innings, the Wolves stretched their lead to 8-3 on RBI singles by Nolan Schrenker and Baur in the fifth, then, with bases loaded in the sixth, Goodwin scored on a fielder's choice and Schrenker went home on a wild pitch.
Lander cut it to 8-6 in the sixth after Painter singled and later scored on a Newberry throwing error, and Lunde's RBI single plated pinch runner Ryan McNulty and Ian Harvey.
Brandan Sheridan's RBI single in the seventh gave Newberry a 9-6 lead.
With bases loaded and no outs in the eighth, Lander trimmed the lead to 9-8 when Dunn scored on a groundout and Grady's RBI double scored Harvey.
Newberry went up 10-8 in the ninth on Sheridan's RBI single.
For Lander, Painter batted 3-for-6 with two RBI and Lunde went 3-for-6 with four RBI.
For Newberry, Nolan Schrenker went 3-for-5, Paige 2-for-3, Goodwin , Sheridan and Cramner all batted 2-for-4 and Baur 2-for-5.
