Carson-Newman baseball upsets No. 7 Lander, 5-3

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman baseball team rallied for four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning Tuesday afternoon and defeated No. 7 Lander, 5-3, in a non-conference contest.

Carson-Newman improves to 4-4 overall, while Lander moves to 5-2.

Ryan Fillers (1-0) earned the win for the Eagles, allowing one earned run on two hits in two innings pitched.

Lander's John Eric Haynes (0-1) suffered the loss, walking one and allowing three earned runs on two hits in one-third of an inning.

Connor Lewis gave Lander a 1-0 lead in the second inning with a solo home run. However, Carson-Newman tied it at 1-all in the bottom of the inning when Philip Duncan's RBI double plated Bo Ausmus.

Lander went up 2-1 in the sixth after Jeff May's RBI double plated Colby Painter.

The Eagles rallied for four runs in the eighth inning to take a 5-2 advantage on Bryan Everhart's two-RBI double and Evan Kirkpatrick's two-RBI single.

Lander cut the Eagle lead to 5-3 in the ninth when Erik Lunde's sacrifice fly plated Austin Dunn.

The Bearcats next travel to St. Augustine, Fla. this weekend to open their Peach Belt Conference schedule at Flagler College on Feb. 16-17.
