Box Score TIGERVILLE – The No. 26-ranked Lander baseball team scored 10 runs in the final three innings Friday afternoon en route to a 16-6, season-opening, non-conference victory over North Greenville College at Ashmore Field.
The two teams will meet Saturday (Feb. 2) in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. at Lander's Dolny Stadium.
Tyler Broome (1-0) earned the victory after striking out two, walking one and allowing two hits in three innings pitched. North Greenville's Stewart Hunt (0-1) suffered the loss, striking out one and allowing four earned runs on six hits in two innings of work.
Tied at 6-all going into the seventh inning, Lander racked up four runs to take a 10-6 advantage. Austin Dunn's RBI double plated Colby Painter, Jacob Tisdale's sacrifice fly scored Jeff May and Graham Ramos and Patrick Grady added RBI singles.
The Bearcats stretched the lead to 11-6 in the eighth inning on Jeff May's solo home run.
Lander saved the best for last by scoring five times in the ninth. Lewis and Painter both had RBI singles, Weston Lawing added a two-RBI single and Aaron Poole was credited with a sacrifice fly.
Ramos gave Lander a 1-0 lead in the first inning when he tripled and later scored on a Lewis RBI single.
The Crusaders tied Lander at 1-1 in the bottom of the inning on Allen Stanton's sacrifice fly then took a 2-1 lead in the second when Frank Polino went home on a bases-loaded walk.
After tying the game at 2-2 in the third when Erik Lunde scored on a passed ball, Lander took a 4-2 advantage in the fourth on Dunn's two-run homer.
North Greenville cut the lead to 4-3 in the fourth via a Lander error, then Lander extended the margin to 6-3 in the fifth on a Grady solo home run and a Crusader throwing error.
North Greenville retaliated to tie the game at 6-all in the bottom of the inning on Polino's RBI double and two Lander fielding errors.
For Lander, Lewis batted 4-for-6 with one double and two RBI; Dunn went 3-for-3 with one homer, two doubles and three RBI; May 3-for-3 with one homer and one double; Grady 2-for-5 with one homer and two RBI; Ramos 3-for-6 with one triple and one RBI; and Painter 2-for-5 with one triple and one RBI.
For North Greenville, Adam Taylor (2-5), Polino (2-4), and Wade Wyatt, Jr. (2-4) all doubled.
