Box Score DUE WEST – Kayla West scored a game-high 29 points and Alyssia Watkins added a double-double Saturday afternoon to lead the Lander women's basketball team to a 79-70 non-conference victory over Erskine College in Belk Arena.
Lander improves to 4-2 on the season, while Erskine drops to 2-2.
West connected on 7-of-19 floor shots, including 3-of-7 threes, and sank 12-of-14 foul shots. Watkins netted 13 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, Ty'hesha Reynolds added 15 points, nine rebounds and four steals, and Ashleigh Zandi 12 points and eight rebounds. Alexis Armstrong led Lander in assists with four.
The Flying Fleet were led by Raygon Hendrix, who scored 17 points, while Tara Potter had 16 points and 14 rebounds, and Marnasha Eugene 11 points.
The Lady Bearcats made 24-of-63 floor shots (38.1 percent), 6-of-17 threes (35.3 percent) and 25-of-36 free throws (69.4 percent).
Erskine connected on 23-of-75 field goals (30.7 percent), 2-of-19 threes (10.5 percent) and 22-of-29 foul shots (75.9 percent.)
Erskine jumped out to an early 10-3 lead at 16:42 only to have the Lady Bearcats come back and go on a 14-0 run to go up 17-10 at 12:38 on a three-point play by Sakezia Kelly. The Fleet came back to tie it up at 17-17 with 8:27 left in the half. After ties at 21-, 23- and 25-all, Erskine end the half on top 38-34.
Except for a tie at 42-42 with 17:20 left in the game, Erskine held the early second-half lead until Lander tied it up at 53-all on a pair of Reynolds free throws with 10:38 remaining.
From there, Lander went on a 15-2 run and built up a 68-55 lead on a Reynolds jumper with 5:00 left. The closest Erskine would get from there was 69-64 with 2:39 left on a Hendrix jumper.
