PEMBROKE, N.C. – Josh Haley's 12th-inning RBI single led the UNC Pembroke baseball team to a 6-5 upset victory over No. 11 Lander in the first game of their Peach Belt Conference series Friday night.
UNCP improves to 26-12 overall and 12-9 in the PBC, while Lander slips to 26-11, 12-7.
Lander's Ross Davis took the loss, striking out 10, walking two and allowing one run (none earned) on five hits in 5.2 innings pitched.
UNCP's Braxton Lewis earned the win after striking out five, walking one and allowing two hits in 3.2 innings pitched.
The Braves took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Haley scored on Jordan Edgerton's groundout.
Lander erupted for four runs in the fourth when Jeff May scored on bases-loaded wild pitch, AJNunziato and Patrick Grady stroked RBI singles and Nunziato later scored on a UNCP error
The Braves rallied for four runs of their own to take a 5-4 lead in the sixth inning. Max Gagnon's double to left center scored Brad Bridgeman, Andrew Alford and Tyler Potter, and Haley's RBI single plated Gagnon.
Lander tied the game at 5-all in the seventh when Ian Harvey scored on Kevin Starr's RBI single.
For Lander, Grady batted 3-for-4, Nunziato 3-for-6, May and Childs 2-for-5 and Harvey 2-for-6.
For UNCP, Hayley went 5-for-6 and Potter 3-for-4.
