MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. - Jordan Owens hit a grand slam in his second consecutive game Sunday afternoon and Kevin Starr added a three-run homer to lead the Lander baseball team to a 10-0 upset victory over No. 21 Georgia College at John Kurtz Field.
Lander, which has won nine of its last 10 games, improves to 12-5 overall and 3-1 in the PBC, while Georgia College drops to 9-8, 2-2.
Bearcat Chris Thomas (3-0) collected the complete game shutout victory after striking out seven and allowing just four hits in nine innings pitched.
GCSU's Derek McGowan (2-3) took the loss after striking out three, walking two and allowing seven earned runs on six hits in 4.1 innings pitched.
Starr got things started off with his three-run shot in the first inning that scored AJ Nunziato, who reached on a fielder's choice, and Patrick Grady, who singled.
With bases loaded and one out in the fifth, Owens' grand slam lifted the Bearcats to a 7-0 lead. Owens also had a grand slam in Lander's 13-5 win last Wednesday against North Greenville.
Nunziato's RBI double in the sixth plated Juan Montana, who walked and stole second, and stretched the Lander lead to 8-0. In the eighth, Weston Lawing's RBI single scored Grady for a 9-0 lead and Jeff May's sacrifice fly sent home Starr to make it 10-0.
For Lander, Grady and Starr both batted 2-for-4, while Erik Lunde and Lawing went 2-for-5.
