NEWBERRY - The Lander baseball team won its fifth straight game Wednesday afternoon and delivered Coach Kermit Smith his 300th career victory when the Bearcats defeated Newberry, 6-0, in a non-conference contest at The Smith Road Complex.
Lander, which has won nine of its last 10 games, improves to 18-6 overall, while Newberry drops to 9-15.
In his third season at Lander, Smith has an overall 71-53 record. In eight years at Belmont Abbey he accumulated 229 victories for an average of 28 victories per season.
The Bearcats' Brandon Miller (4-0) picked up the win on the mound after striking out seven, walking three and allowing just three hits in five innings pitched. Kyle Tate and Scott Elitzky both pitched two innings in relief.
Newberry's Wesley Camp (0-2) took the loss after striking out two, walking one and allowing five earned runs on nine hits in 6.2 innings.
Lander took a 2-0 first-inning lead when AJ Nunziato's stroked an RBI double which scored Erik Lunde, then Nunziato went home on Weston Lawing's RBI single.
In the sixth inning, Aaron Poole's RBI single plated Jordan Owens and Ian Harvey crossed the plate when Poole was tagged out on a stolen base attempt to stretch the lead to 4-0.
Lunde made it 5-0 in the seventh when he scored on Juan Montana's RBI single to centerfield and the Bearcats scored their final run in the ninth on Nunziato's solo home run down the right field line.
For Lander, Poole went 3-for-4, Montana 2-for-4 and Nunziato 2-for-5.
Newberry's Robby Scaggs batted 2-for-3.
