AMERICUS, Ga. – Patrick Grady batted 3-for-6 with five RBI Sunday afternoon to lead the Lander baseball team to a 14-1 Peach Belt Conference victory over Georgia Southwestern and complete the PBC three-game series sweep.
Lander, which downed the Hurricanes, 10-1 and 4-2 on Saturday, improves to 17-6 overall and 7-2 in the PBC. GSW drops to 3-19, 2-9. The 14 runs scored is a season-high for the Bearcats.
Lander's Cory Hopper (2-1) earned the win by striking out seven and allowing just three hits in eight innings pitched. GSW's Frank Ambrosino (0-1) took the loss with four strikeouts and five earned runs on nine hits in seven innings.
The Bearcats, who outhit the Hurricanes, 17-4, took a 1-0 lead in the third on a Grady RBI single that plated Juan Montana.
Lander stretched the lead to 5-0 in the seventh inning on Erik Lunde's RBI single and Grady's three-RBI double.
Lander continued its scoring spree in the eighth, when, with bases loaded, Lunde was hit by a pitch that forced in Ian Harvey, AJ Nunziato blasted a three-RBI double to centerfield and Grady added another RBI single.
The Bearcats score-fest ended with four runs in the ninth inning. Jeff May and Montana had RBI singles, May went home on a bases-loaded hit by pitch and Montana scored on Nunziato's sacrifice fly.
GSW's lone run came in the ninth when John Duran singled, advanced to second on a hit by pitch, to third on a fly ball and scored on a wild pitch.
For Lander, Colby Painter went 3-for-4, Montana 3-for-5, Lunde and May both went 2-for-4 and Harvey 2-for-5.
The Hurricanes' Duran batted 2-for-4.
