TIGERVILLE - Jordan Owens blasted a ninth-inning grand slam Wednesday afternoon as the Lander baseball team defeated North Greenville, 13-5, in a non-conference game at Ashemore Field.
Lander, which is ranked No. 8 in the Southeast Region, improves to 11-5 overall, while the Crusaders, the sixth ranked team in the region, drops to 10-5.
Bearcat Brandon Miller (3-0) earned the win after striking out three, walking two and allowing no runs and just two hits in three innings.
North Greenville's Derek Fulmer suffered the loss with five strikeouts, five walks and one run (unearned) on one hit in four innings pitched.
Lander took a 1-0 lead in the third inning after Erik Lunde doubled then scored on a North Greenville error.
The Bearcats made it 6-1 in the sixth when Colby Painter's RBI single plated Aaron Poole, Patrick Grady drove in Painter and Juan Montana, Kevin Starr's RBI single sent Erik Lunde home, and Grady scored on a wild pitch.
Jeff May led off the seventh inning with a solo homerun, then Lunde's RBI single scored Poole and gave Lander an 8-0 lead.
The Crusaders cut the margin to 8-5 in the eighth on Taylor Hollifield's RBI double, RBI singles by Allen Staton and John Reinholz, and two wild pitches that plated Fulmer and David Frazier.
Lander came right back in the ninth add added five more runs for a 13-5 lead. Painter scored on a passed ball, then Owens, who went 1-for-6, stroked his grand slam.
For Lander, Lunde (2-for-4) and Poole (1-for-4) both doubled.
For North Greenville, Reinholz (2-for-4) and Hollifield (1-for-4) both doubled.
