GREENWOOD – Todd Hughson became only the second player in Lander school history to toss a no-hitter Friday afternoon as he led the Bearcats baseball team to a 1-0 upset victory against No. 24-ranked Limestone College in a non-conference game at Dolny Stadium.
Hughson (1-0), who tied the school strikeout record with 12, flirted with a perfect game for eight and two-thirds innings until pinch-hitter Michael Hughey drew a walk off a full count in the ninth. Former Lander player David Wilson pitched a perfect game against North Greenville in 2003.
Lander improves to 3-2 overall, while Limestone drops to 1-3.
Limestone's Cameron Ward (0-1) was tagged with the loss after striking out four and allowing one run on four hits in six innings pitched.
Kevin Childs, who reached on a fielder's choice, scored the game's lone run in the fifth inning when he crossed the plate on Jeff May's RBI double to centerfield.
Erik Lunde, AJ Nunziato, Ian Harvey, and Kevin Starr also had one hit each for the Bearcats.
