COLUMBUS, Ga. – Jordan Owens' game-winning RBI single to center field in the eighth inning gave the Lander baseball team a 3-2 upset victory over No. 12 Columbus State Sunday evening in the first round of the Peach Belt Conference Tournament at Golden Park.
With the win, Lander (29-22), the fourth seed in the East, advances to play the North Georgia, a 5-0 winner over Armstrong Atlantic, at 7:30 p.m., Monday. Columbus State (32-16), the top seed in the West, will face Armstrong Atlantic at 4 p.m., Monday.
The victory marked the first time Lander has won a Peach Belt Conference tournament game since 1998. It was also a good comeback for the Bearcats, who lost a three-game series at Columbus State last weekend.
In only his fifth start of the season, Lander's Darrin Tew (5-1) earned the complete-game victory after striking out eight, walking one and allowing two earned runs. Tew closed the game by striking out the side in the eighth and fanning two more in the ninth.
Columbus State's Thomas Campbell (7-3) took the loss after striking out eight, walking one and allowing three earned runs on six hits in eight innings. Brian Satterfield, in one inning of relief, struck out one and walked one.
Columbus State jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning after Bruce Alter's sacrifice fly to left center plated Eric Weiss.
Alter gave the Cougars a 2-0 advantage in the sixth when he smacked a solo home run over the left field wall.
Lander's Jeff May knotted the score at 2-2 in the seventh inning with a two-run homer over the left field wall that scored Kevin Childs.
Owens' game-winning hit plated Erik Lunde, who reached on a double down the right field line.
Lander's Robert Skinner had one walk to build on his Lander single-season (46) and career (137) records.
