ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. - Adam Davey and Jeff May both homered to lead Lander to a 6-2 Peach Belt Conference victory over Flagler College in the first game as the Bearcats earned a doubleheader split Saturday afternoon. Flagler won the second game, 8-6.
Lander moves to 24-19 overall and 10-9 in the PBC, while Flagler goes to 19-22, 9-11.
In the first game, the Bearcats' Cory Hopper (6-2) earned the win after striking out eight, walking five and giving up five hits in 6.1 shutout innings.
Flagler's Jonathan Arnold (3-6) took the loss, striking out eight, walking five and allowing five earned runs on four hits in six innings.
Lander took a 2-0 lead in the second inning on Adam Davey's two-run homer to left field that scored Jeff May.
The Bearcats made it 6-0 in the third. Robert Skinner led off with his school-record 43rd walk of the season and then later scored on a wild pitch. With bases loaded, May's double down the left line scored Cody McElhaney, Kevin Childs and AJ Nunziato. Skinner also holds Lander's career record for walks with 134.
The Saints cut Lander's lead to 6-2 in the eighth when Tyler Vanover's double down the left field line plated Kyle Foti and Vanover scored on Charlie Stewart's RBI single to right field.
For Lander, May batted 2-for-4.
For Flagler, John Sgromolo went 2-for-5.
In the second game, Micah Kellogg earned the win after striking out five, walking two and allowing four earned runs on five hits in six innings of work.
Lander's Todd Hughson (1-3) took the loss, striking out four, and allowing one earned run on three hits in 2.2 innings pitched.
Lander took a 3-0 lead in the first inning on Kevin Childs' three-run homer that scored Nunziato and Owens.
The Bearcat stretched the lead to 5-0 in the second inning when Davey and McElhaney scored on a Flagler error.
The Saints erupted for six runs in the third inning to take a 6-5 lead. Vanover stroked a grand slam over the left field fence and Charlie Stewart followed with a two-run homer.
Lander tied the game at 6-6 in the sixth on May's solo homer.
Flagler bounced back in the bottom of the inning to go up 7-6 on Nate Fudala's RBI single that scored Travis Coverston, then stretched the lead to 8-6 in the seventh when Vanover scored on Charlie Stewart's sacrifice fly.
For Lander, Davey went 2-for-4.
for Flagler, Fudala and Coverston both went 2-for-4.
