GREENWOOD - The No. 23-ranked Limestone College baseball team rallied for two runs in the ninth inning Tuesday night to defeat Lander, 7-5, in a non-conference game at Legion Field.
Limestone improves to 13-5 overall, while Lander moves to 11-9.
The Saints' Andrew Thompson (1-0) earned the win after striking out three, walking two and giving up just one hit in two innings pitched. Cameron Culp picked up his third save of the season with two strikeouts and one ball in one inning of hitless work.
Lander's Darren Tew (0-1) suffered the loss with one strikeout and one earned run on two hits in one inning pitched.
The Saints' Joe Maloney scored the winning run on a Chad Balderman's RBI single and then Balderman added an insurance run on Zach Howard's RBI single.
Limestone took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when Jeremy Peed scored on a bases-loaded walk. The Saints stretched their advantage to 4-0 in the fourth on RBI singles by Peed, David Christy and Maloney.
Lander trimmed the lead to 3-2 in the fourth on Kevin Childs' two-run home run over the right field fence.
Limestone made is 5-2 in the fifth when Howard's sacrifice fly plated Micah Robinson
The Bearcats rallied for three runs to tie the game at 5-5 in the sixth inning. Cody McElhaney's RBI double plated AJ Nunziato, Jeff May's RBI single scored McElhaney and May then scored on a bases-loaded walk.
For Lander, Childs went 1-for-4 with one home run, while McElhaney (1-for-4, two runs, one RBI) and Skinner (3-for-4) both doubled. May batted 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI.
For Limestone, Robinson (2-for-5, one run) and Howard (1-for-2, two RBI) both doubled, while Balderman batted 3-for-3 with two runs and one RBI, Christy 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI, and Peed went 2-for-5 with two runs and one RBI.
