GREENWOOD – Jordan Owen's soaring home run over the left field fence in the fourth inning Wednesday night broke a 2-2 deadlock and led the No. 15 Lander baseball team to a 6-2 non-conference victory over Newberry College at Legion Field.
Lander, which entered the national rankings on Monday for the first time this season, improves to 15-9 overall, while Newberry drops to 12-14.
Darren Tew (1-1) earned the victory after striking out four and keeping the Wolves hitless in two innings pitched. Todd Hughson, who started the game for the Bearcats, struck out two, walked two and allowed one earned run on four hits in three innings.
Newberry's Chris Phillips (0-1) took the loss as he struck out two, walked four and allowed four earned runs on three hits in four innings.
Lander took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Jeff May doubled to left center, advanced to third on a groundout and scored on a pickoff attempt at second base.
Newberry went up 2-1 in the third after Chris Harper's RBI double plated Chas Goodwin and Harper later scored on a passed ball.
Lander's Alan Abreu, who reached on a walk, tied that game at 2-2 in the third after advancing home on AJ Nunziato's sacrifice bunt.
The Bearcats regained the lead for good on Owens' third homer of the season.
The Bearcats stretched their advantage in the fifth when Alan Abreu singled to right center, stole second, and went home on Nunziato's RBI single to left field. Jeff May's RBI double in the sixth scored Owens and gave Lander its final run of the evening.
For Lander, Owens went 1-for-3 with two runs and two RBI; and May batted 2-for-4 with one double, one run and one RBI.
For Newberry, Harper went 1-for-3 with one run and one RBI and Andy Vogel was 2-for-4.
