GREENWOOD – Robert Skinner doubled, tripled and recorded three RBI Tuesday evening to lead the Lander baseball team to an 8-3 non-conference victory over Wingate at Legion Field.
Lander, which scored seven runs in the fourth inning and outhit the Bulldogs, 8-5, improves to 3-2 overall. Wingate suffers its first loss at 4-1.
The Bearcats Todd Hughson (1-0) earned the victory as he struck out seven, walked one and allowed two earned runs on three hits in five innings pitched.
Wingate's Ben Currie (0-1) took the loss after striking out four, walking six, and allowing six runs (two earned) on three hits in 3.2 innings pitched.
Skinner, who has started every game in his four years at Lander, went 2-for-3, while Eric Lunde batted 1-for-2 with one double and two runs scored.
Wingate's Taylor Honeycutt, who gave the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead in the third inning with a two-run homer, went 1-for-3.
Down 2-0 going into the fourth inning, the Bearcats went to work. Alan Abreu's bases-loaded single plated AJ Nunziato, Jordan Owens singled in Adam Davey and Abreu went home on a balk. Owens made it 4-0 when he scored on Marshall Creed's RBI single, then Skinner's two-run triple down the right line made it 6-2. Skinner later scored on Nunziato's RBI single.
Wingate cut the lead to 7-3 in the sixth on Matthew Barrier's bases-loaded hit by pitch.
Skinner's RBI double plated Eric Lunde in the sixth for the game's final run.
Lander will host a six-team tournament this weekend with three games each Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Game times are 11 a.m., 3 p.m and 7 all each day.
