NEWBERRY - The Lander baseball team pounded out 14 hits Sunday afternoon as the Bearcats defeated Newberry College, 12-5, in a non-conference game at the Smith Road Complex.
Lander improves to 2-2 overall, while Newberrry drops to 2-1.
Lander's Brandon Farquhar (1-0) earned the win as he struck out two and allowed just two hits in 3.1 innings pitched..
Newberry's Chauncey Mattei (0-1) was the losing pitcher after striking out two, walking two and allowing three earned runs on four hits in three innings of work.
For Lander, AJ Nunziato batted 3-for-6 with one double, two runs scored and two RBI, while Adam Davey went 2-for-4 with one double, two runs and two RBI. Robert Skinner hit 3-for-5 with three runs and one RBI, Marshall Creed 2-for-5 with two runs, and Patrick Grady 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI.
For Newberry, Sanchez Gartman went 2-for-4 with one home run and three RBI, Chas Goodwin 1-for-2 with one double and one RBI, and Chris Love 2-for-4 with one run.
Lander took a 3-0 advantage in the first inning and never lost lead. Nunziato's two-run double plated Skinner and Creed, then Nunziato crossed the plate on Davey's RBI double.
Newberry trimmed the lead to 3-1 in the second inning on Gartman's solo home run over the right field fence.
The Bearcats stretched their advantage to 5-1 in the third when Cody McElhaney scored on Grady's bases-loaded walk and Davey went home on Alan Abreu's sacrifice fly.
The Wolves made it 5-3 in the third on Gartman's two-RBI single.
Lander added three more runs in the fourth to take an 8-3 advantage. Skinner's RBI single scored Creed, Skinner scored on a balk, and Nunziato went home on a throwing error.
Newberry retaliated in the bottom of the inning when Gray scored on Goodwin's double and Kevin Rufus' sacrifice bunt plated Fogarile to cut the lead to 8-5.
Lander's four-run sixth inning culminated the Bearcats' scoring. Davey's RBI single scored Skinner, Davey and Jeff May scored on throwing errors and Grady scored on Abreu's RBI single.
