MIAMI SHORES, Fla. - The Barry University baseball team used a three-run, fifth inning to pull away from Lander and post a 6-2 non-conference victory Sunday afternoon at Feinbloom Field.
Barry improves to 8-7 overall, while the Bearcats slip to 9-7.
The Bucs' Corey Witkowski (3-1) earned the win after striking out 11 and allowing two earned runs on eight hits in the complete nine innings.
Lander's Scott Elitzky (0-1) took the loss with two strikeouts, three walks and four earned runs on eight hits in five innings of work.
After Barry took a 2-0 lead in the first on a fielding error and a sacrifice bunt by Adrian English, Lander tied the game at 2-2 in the fourth when Jordan Owen's two-run homer plated AJ Nunziato, who had reached on a doubled.
Barry regained the lead for good with three runs in the fifth. English and Ryan Garcia had RBI singles, followed by Evan Ashley's RBI double. The Bucs closed out the scoring in the seventh on another Garcia RBI single.
For Lander, Owens went 2-for-4 with one home run, Nunziato batted 1-for-4 with one double and Cody McElhaney was 2-for-4.
For Barry, which outhit Lander, 11-8, Ashley batted 2-for-3 with one double and one RBI, while Drew Dwelly went 3-for-5 with one RBI, Garcia 2-for-3 with two RBI, and Ashley 2-for-3 with one RBI.
