GREENWOOD – AJ Nunziato's game-winning RBI single in the seventh inning helped Cory Hopper earn his second victory of the season Friday night as the Lander baseball team defeated North Greenville University, 2-1, in a non-conference game at Legion Field.
Lander, which outhit the Crusaders, 9-4, improved to 6-4 overall, while the Crusaders fell to 4-5.
Hopper struck out six, walked one and allowed one earned run on four hits in seven innings pitched. Brantley Blalock had one strikeout and and allowed no hits in 1.2 innings, while Brandon Miller earned his second save of the season with one strikeout.
North Greenville's Drew Provence (1-2) suffered the loss as he struck out six, walked four and allowed two earned runs on six hits in six innings.
Lander's Adam Davey went 1-for-4 with one double, while Robert Skinnner batted 2-for-5 and Nunziato 2-for-4.
For North Greenville, Tyler Callicutt was 1-for-3 with a solo home run, while Derek Fulmer went 2-for-4.
The Bearcats took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Eric Lunde singled, advanced to third on Davey's double to left center, and scored on Ryan McNulty's sacrifice fly.
Callicutt tied the game at 1-1 with his solo homer in the seventh.
Nunziato's RBI single in the bottom of the inning plated Marshall Creed for the winning run.
The two teams will face each other again tomorrow at North Greenville in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
