Shaw leads Lander to 2-0 shutout against Wingate

WINGATE, N.C. - Jamie Shaw scored twice Saturday afternoon to lead the Lander women's soccer team to a 2-0 non-conference victory over Wingate University at the Wingate Soccer Facility.

Lander improves to 2-0, while the Bulldogs drop their season opener to fall to 0-1 overall. Lander concludes a three-match road swing at Erskine College Wednesday (5 p.m.).

Lander scored once in each half. In the 42nd minute, Shaw picked a loose ball from a charging Wingate freshman goalkeeper Carly Rives and chipped the ball into the back of the net. She then converted a penalty kick at 49:35 to conclude the scoring.

Wingate outshot Lander 8-5, including a 5-2 advantage in shots on goal. Wingate sophomore midfielder Izabella Miranda had three shots to match Lander's Shaw.

Lander senior goalkeeper Katherine Baltz picked up her second win of the young season. Baltz collected five saves. In her Bulldog debut, Rives did not record a save. Both Rives and Baltz went the distance Saturday.
