AMERICUS, Ga. - The Lander baseball team split is Peach Belt Conference doubleheader at Georgia Southwestern Saturday afternoon as the Hurricanes won the first game, 12-0, while the Bearcats claimed the second, 6-4, at Hurricane Stadium. (Game 1 Boxscore | Game 2 Boxscore)
Lander moves to 21-17 overall and 5-13 in the PBC, while the Hurricanes are 21-13, 10-8.
In the second game, Cory Hopper (4-2) earned the win for Lander after striking out five, walking three and allowing four earned runs on 12 hits in seven innings.
The Bearcats jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the third inning when Robert Skinner's two-RBI single scored Bud Lanier and Aaron Fludd.
GSW came back with one run in the third then took a 3-2 lead in the fourth.
Lander tied it at 3-3 in the fifth after Pete Hernandez scored on Jordan Owens' RBI single, then stretched the lead to 5-3 in the sixth on back-to-back RBI triples by Fludd and Lanier.
The Bearcats scored their final run in the ninth on Owens' RBI single.
For Lander, Lanier batted 3-for-5, while Owens went 3-for-4.
In the first game, GSW scored three runs in the fourth inning and nine in the seventh.
Lander's Darrin Tew (4-6) suffered the loss with five strikeouts and three walks on one earned run on seven its in five innings.
Hernandez went 2-for-4, collecting Lander's only hits of the game.
