NEWBERRY - The Lander baseball team held off a late Newberry rally as the Bearcats earned a 7-6 non-conference victory Tuesday night at the Smith Road Complex.
Lander improves to 19-11, while Newberry drops to 12-21.
Lander's Brandon Farquhar (5-1) picked up the win with one walk and one earned run on four hits in five innings.
Newberry's Chauncey Mattei (0-1) took the loss, striking out four, walking four and allowing four earned runs on five hits in 3.2 innings pitched.
Newberry kicked off the scoring in the third inning when it went up 1-0 on Scott Horvath's RBI single.
Lander came back in the fourth inning and took a 5-1 lead. With bases loaded Hunter Dowis' sacrifice fly scored Joe Tebaldi, Robert Skinner cleared the bases with a three-RBI triple and Skinner scored on Jordan Owens' single.
Newberry cut the the Lander lead to 5-2 in the seventh on Chris Love's RBI single.
Aaron Fludd's RBI single in the seventh scored Tebaldi then the Bearcats added another run in the eighth when Owens went home on Brooks Reames' single to give Lander a 7-2 lead.
Newberry added four runs in the eighth to cut the lead to 7-6 when Jim Pollack's RBI single plated Jovan Rohena, Horvath scored on a Lander error after stealing third, and Pollack and Chris Love went home on back-to-back groundouts.
For Lander, Owens batted 3-for-4 and Fludd 3-for-5, while Skinner, Pete Hernandez and Reames went 2-for-5.
For Newberry, Rohena hit 3-for-4, Love 2-for-3 and Horvath 2-for-5.
