GREENWOOD – The Lander baseball team pounded out 15 hits Tuesday night en route to a 15-4 non-conference victory over Anderson University at Legion Field.
The Bearcats improve to 17-9 overall, while Anderson slips to 10-22.
Lander’s Christian Brown (2-0) was awarded the win after striking out three, walking two and allowing no hits in two innings pitched.
Anderson’s Brett Campbell (1-3) took the loss, striking out one, walking two and allowing six earned runs on six hits in 1.1 innings.
Lander took a quick 3-0 lead in the first inning when Robert Skinner and Jordan Owens produced back-to-back RBI doubles then Owens scored on Pete Hernandez’s RBI single.
The Bearcats stretched the lead to 8-0 in the second when, with bases loaded, Aaron Fludd and Bud Lanier scored on Owen’s two-RBI single. Pete Hernandez followed with a three-run home run.
Anderson cut the Lander lead to 8-3 in the third when Derek Hipp scored on Ryan Saxon’s groundout, Ryan Kirkland’s RBI double plated Matt Hill, then, with bases loaded, Saxon went home on Jonathan Romano’s fielder’s choice.
Lander stretched the margin to 12-3 in the sixth. Fludd and Lanier scored on an Anderson throwing error, Skinner went home on Owen’s RBI triple and Owens scored on an error.
Hunter Dowis’ and Lanier both had RBI doubles, while Owens had an RBI single in the seventh inning to give Lander a 15-3 lead.
The Trojans tallied their final run of the game when Saxon scored on a wild pitch in the ninth.
For Lander, Hernandez batted 2-for-4 with one homer and four RBI; Lanier went 2-for-3 with one triple, one double, four runs scored and one RBI; Owens went 4-for-5 with one triple, three runs and five RBI; and Skinner (1-for-3, three runs, one RBI) and Dowis (1-for-5, one run, one RBI) both doubled. Fludd hit 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
For Anderson, Kirkland went 1-for-4 with one double and one RBI and Saxon hit 3-for-4 with two runs.
