AUGUSTA, Ga. - The Augusta State baseball team took advantage of five Lander errors to post a 12-6 non-conference victory over the Bearcats Wednesday afternoon at Jaguar Field.
Augusta State improves to 3-6 overall, while Lander suffers its first defeat of the season and falls to 6-1.
ASU's Josh Evans (1-1) was awarded the win as he struck out five, walked four and allowed three earned runs on two hits in 5.1 innings.
Lander's Darrin Tew (1-1) took the loss, walking two and allowing one earned run on one hit in one inning.
Augusta State took a 3-0 lead in the third inning when Alex Walker scored on a groundout and Curtis Parker and Carl Burrow scored on a Lander error.
The Jags added five more runs in the fourth inning as Cole Payne scored on a wild pitch, Tristan Toorie had an RBI single and later scored on an error, Burrow scored on an error, and Tony Baker had a sacrifice fly.
The Bearcats cut the margin to 8-3 in the sixth inning. Robert Skinner belted an RBI double that scored Devin Ridlehoover, then Skinner scored on Pete Hernandez's fielder's choice and Bud Lanier crossed the plate on Alan Abreu's fielder's choice.
ASU made it 9-3 in the sixth when Toorie scored on Justin Appel's fielder's choice.
Lander tallied three more runs in the seventh inning to cut the margin to 9-6. Skinner's RBI single scored Brooks Reames, who reached on a double; and Kevin Childs' two-RBI double scored Jordan Owens and Skinner.
Augusta State came right back with three more runs in the eighth on RBI singles from Payne and Walker and Kenny Smith's groundout.
Skinner batted 2-for-5 with one double, two runs scored and two RBI; Childs went 1-for-2 with one double and two RBI; and Reames went 1-for-5 with one double and one run.
For Augusta, Burrow hit 2-for-4 with one triple, and two runs scored; and Payne was 4-for-4 with one double, two runs scored and one RBI.
Lander will host Felician College in a non-conference doubleheader at 12 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 20 at Legion Field.
