GREENWOOD - The Lander baseball team recorded two lopsided wins in 30-degree temperatures Wednesday afternoon as the unbeaten Bearcats defeated Emmanuel College, 18-0 and 19-2, in a non-conference doubleheader at Legion Field. (Game 1 Boxscore | Game 2 Boxscore)
Lander improves to 5-0, while Emmanuel is 1-5.
In the first game, Brandon Farquhar (1-0) earned the win as he struck out eight and walked two in five hitless innings to earn the win. Kevin Childs pitched two innings in relief and struck out four and allowed two hits.
Emmanuel's Angel Rodriguez took the loss as he walked four and allowed seven runs in 1.2 innings of work.
Lander took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on Jordan Owens' RBI single and Pete Hernandez's sacrifice fly.
In the second inning Robert Skinner added a solo home run, Hernandez had an RBI single and Ryan McNulty belted a three-run homer.
The Bearcats exploded for 11 runs in the fourth inning fueled by Hernandez's grand slam and RBI singles by McNulty, Alan Abreu and Skinner.
Kevin Childs went 1-for-1 with one triple, while Skinner batted 2-for-3 with three runs scored and three RBI; Hernandez 2-for-2 with three runs scored and four RBI; and McNulty 2-for-4 with two runs and four RBI.
In the second game, Lander put the game out of reach early with a 16-run first inning. The Bearcats got RBI singles from McNulty, Abreu, Skinner, Hernandez, Brooks Reames, and Devin Ridlehoover.
Chris Thomas (1-0) earned the win on the mound as he struck out two, walked two and allowed one run on no hits in three innings pitched. Emmanuel's Rodriguez suffered the loss, allowing six earned runs on seven hits the opening inning.
Ridlehoover went 4-for-6 with one double, three runs scored and two RBI; and Hernandez batted 2-for-5 with one double, two runs scored and one RBI. Skinner went 3-for-5 with one run and two RBI; McNulty 2-for-4 with two runs and three RBI; and Abreu 2-for-2, one run and three RBI.
