NEWBERRY - Three Lander men's basketball players posted double figures Saturday night to lead the Bearcats to a 68-64 season-opening win against Newberry College in a non-conference game in Eleazer Arena.
Lander is 1-0, while Newberry is 0-1.
Calvin Liptrot led the Bearcat attack with a game-high 22 points on 9-of-16 shooting, while Darion Canty added 19 points and Jermel Kennedy 18 points and nine rebounds. Tovi Bailey also had six rebounds and four assists for the Bearcats.
Newberry was led by Tony Davis and Danny Huffor, who scored 16 and 14 points respectively. Chris Reynolds grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds, while Davis had seven.
Lander, which led 27-25 at halftime, made 26-of-62 field goals for 41.9 percent, including 4-of-16 threes for 25 percent. The Bearcats were 12-of-17 from the foul line for 70.6 percent.
Newberry was 24-of-60 from the floor for 40 percent, including 7-of-26 threes for 26.9 percent. The Wolves hit 9-of-17 free throws for 52.9 percent.
Newberry outrebounded Lander, 44-37.
