Armstrong Atlantic defeats Lander baseball, 6-1

GREENWOOD – Jeff Chase pitched a four-hitter and Drew Walker hit a home run, leading Armstrong Atlantic State to a 6-1 Peach Belt Conference baseball victory over the Lander Bearcats Friday night at Legion Field.

The Pirates improved to 36-17 overall and 13-12 in the Peach Belt. Lander fell to 25-21, 8-15 in the PBC.

The Peach Belt rivals will complete the regular season Saturday with a double-header at 3 o’clock at Legion Field.

Chase (6-3) allowed only one hit through the first six innings. He went the distance, striking out seven and walking three. Lander pitchers allowed only eight hits but also walked eight.

Armstrong took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Josh Wilson hit a leadoff double off the center field fence, moved to third when Juan Dorado reached on an error, and scored on Alex Wyche’s bunt.

The Pirates upped their lead to 4-0 in the third with Wilson once again starting the rally. Wilson walked, moved to second on Dorado’s bunt, stopped at third on Wyche’s single, and scored on a balk. Walker followed with a two-run homer over the right-field fence. It was his fourth homer of the season.

The Bearcats got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth when Bud Lanier hit his 10th homer of the season, a solo shot over the left-field fence. It was Lander’s first hit of the game.

The Pirates increased their lead to 5-1 in the fifth when Dorado singled, moved to third on a pair of walks, and scored on Justin Harris’s sacrifice fly to left. Armstrong added its final run in the sixth on a bases-loaded walk.

Lanier recorded the first out of the seventh when he made a spectacular catch over his head in center field, falling down in front of the fence to rob Harris.

Carlos Cardoza-Oquenda paced the Pirates, going 2-for-3. Walker was 1-for-4 with a homer and two RBI, and Wilson was 1-for-4 with two runs scored.

Nate Mangiapane paced the Bearcats, going 2-for-4. Lanier, with his homer, and Brooks Reames had the team’s other hits.
