Limestone baseball triumphs over Lander, 17-5

GAFFNEY, - The Lander baseball team suffered its worst loss of the season Wednesday afternoon when Limestone College defeated the Bearcats, 17-5, in a non-conference game at Bob Prevatte Field.

The Saints climb to 25-16 overall as the Bearcats stand at 24-14.

The game saw 13 pitchers take to the mound. The Bearcats’ Derek Whaley took the loss after he gave up six runs (five earned) in the opening one-third inning. Five more pitchers threw for Lander.

Limestone’s Kyle Matheney (2-2) got the win has he pitched the third and fourth innings. He gave four hits and allowed no runs as he struck out one batter. Matt Crisp got the start and gave up five runs (three earned) on seven hits in two innings of work. He walked two and posted one strikeout.

The Saints’ Greg Dailey batted 4-6 with one triple, three runs scored, and two stolen bases. Tim Welsh hit 3-5 with one double, two RBIs, and three runs scored. David Christy posted one double, two RBIs, and scored one run. Seth Austin was 2-3 at bat with one double, three RBIs, and one run scored. Joe Maloney was 2-4 with one homerun, four RBIs, and scored once. Ryan McKenzie was 2-5 with one homerun, two RBIs, and one run scored.

Lander’s Jeff Caskey hit 3-4 with one stolen base, an RBI, and one run scored. Brian Bender was 2-5 with one stolen base and one run. Nate Mangiapane was 2-4 with one double and one RBI.

The Bearcats host UNC Pembroke for a three-game Peach Belt Conference series on April 10-11.
