Lady Bearcats advance in PBC women’s tennis tourney

The Lady Bearcats upped their record to 12-6 on the season and improved their chances of getting an invitation to the NCAA Southeast Regional. Lander will face Columbus State in the quarterfinals on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. North Georgia finished its season 6-18.

The seventh-seeded Lady Bearcats dominated No. 10 seed North Georgia, winning all three doubles matches to take a 3-0 lead and then winning two singles matches to get the required five points. Four other singles matches went unfinished because the match had already been decided.

In doubles, Eliza Adusumilli and Nicola James (Lander) defeated Velina Boteva and Maria Dreaden 8-2, Vuokko Vahatalo and Anni Pajunen (Lander) outlasted Meredith Cash and Ashley Marie Jordan 8-6, and Caitlin Fell and Ana Luiza Zaia (Lander) defeated Katherine Harrison and Mallory Perloff 8-4.

The Lady Bearcats clinched the victory when Vahatalo swept Cash at No. 3 singles, 6-1 and 6-3, and Zaia dominated Perloff at No. 6, 6-2, 6-0.

Matches that went unfinished were Pajunen versus Boteva at No. 1, Adusumilli against Dreaden at No. 2, Fell versus Harrison at No. 4, and James against Jordan at No. 5.
