DUE WEST - The Erskine baseball team scored one run in the bottom of the ninth to force extra innings then defeated No. 18 Lander, 2-1, Tuesday in a non-conference game when Keith Hill scored the winning run on Mo Seay’s RBI single in the tenth.
Erskine improves to 19-7, while Lander falls to 18-7.
The Bearcats took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Brian Bender scored on Robert Skinner’s RBI bunt.
After that score, the game turned into a pitchers' duel between Erskine starter William Buzhardt and Lander’s Tim Rau. Buzhardt would not allow another run in the next six innings of work and struck out seven Bearcats, but left the game in the top of the eighth on the short end of a 1-0 game. Rau was just as effective for Lander, pitching eight shut out innings and striking out three batters and left the game in line for the win.
Erskine’s John Bolding sent the game into extra innings with an inside the park home run.
Bolding finished the game 2-for-4 with one home run and one RBI to lead the Fleet, while Hill was 2-for-4 with one run scored. Pearson (3-1) picked up the win pitching two-thirds of an inning in relief.
Bender led the Bearcats at the plate going 3-for-5 with one double and one run scored, while Nate Mangiapane was 2-for-4 with one double. Glover (1-1) took the loss allowing two runs (one earned) in 1.3 innings of work.
