Lady Bearcats put five in double figures, defeat Columbus

GREENWOOD – Ciara Lyons scored 22 points and grabbed nine rebounds while leading five Lander women's basketball players in double figures Saturday afternoon in a 93-75 Peach Belt Conference victory over Columbus State in Horne Arena.

Lander improves to 13-7 overall and 8-5 in the PBC, while Columbus State falls to 12-11, 5-8.

Lyons connected on 7-of-17 field goals and 8-of-12 free throws, while Brianna Webb had 14 points, TaSheba Butler and Jasmine Judge 12 points each, and Brittni Johnson 10 points and six assists. Shannon McKever led the Lady Bearcats in rebounds with 12, while scoring eight points.

Columbus State's Phebe Smith scored a game-high 28 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to lead the Lady Cougars, while Nikki Urbizo added 14 points and Rosetta Hollis 10.

After leading 42-31 at halftime, the Lady Bearcats gradually pulled away in the second half and built up a 68-49 lead on a pair of Lyons free throws at 8:40.

Lander's biggest lead of the game was 25 points - 82-57 at 6:06 and 87-62 at 4:37.

After battling close for the first six minutes of the game the Lady Bearcats started breaking away from CSU at the 13:40 mark and built its first double-digit lead at 29-18 on a Nardia Robbins jumper at 7:46. Lander got up by as many as 15 points, 40-25 with 2:26, before the Lady Cougars trimmed the margin to 42-31 at halftime.

The Lady Bearcats connected on 32-of-72 field goals for 44.4 percent, including 8-of-16 three pointers for 50 percent. Lander, which entered the game shooting 63.9 from the free throw line, made 21-of-27 foul shots for 77.8 percent.

Columbus State was 30-of-64 from the floor for 46.9 percent, including 5-of-15 from the three-point line for 33.3 percent. The Lady Cougars made 10-of-15 free throws for 66.7 percent.
