GREENWOOD - The Lander baseball team erupted for three runs in the fourth inning Tuesday afternoon and held on for a 3-1 non-conference victory over Newberry College at Legion Field.
Lander improves to 2-1 on the season, while Newberry evens its record at 1-1.
AJ Nunziato singled, then scored on McCann's RBI triple to give Lander a 1-0 lead. McCann then scored on Robert's Skinner's sacrifice fly and Devin Ridlehoover made it 3-0 when he crossed the plate on Darrin Tew's groundout to second.
Newberry loaded the bases in the top of the ninth and scored its lone run when Jim Pollack went home on Derek Bley's groundout to first.
Billy Veal (1-0) earned the win for Lander as he struck out two, walked one and allowed three hits in five complete innings. David Glover earned the save, striking out one, walking one and allowing one hit in the ninth inning.
Newberry's Chris Romas (0-1) suffered the loss, striking out four, walking one and allowing three earned runs on four hits in 3.1 innings pitched.
For Lander, McCann went 1-for-4 with one triple and Cruse Tollison went 1-for-1 with one double. Brian Bender, Josh Lovvorn, and Nunziato also singled.
For Newberry, Scott Horvath went 2-for-4, while John Kirkland, Jovan Rohena, Casio Grider, and Jose Rosa also singled.
