No. 7 Catawba baseball beats No. 27 Lander

SALISBURY, NC – Josh Hohn hit a pair of home runs and Craige Lyerly scored the winning run on a wild pitch with two outs in the eighth to give seventh-ranked Catawba a 7-6 win over 27th-ranked Lander in baseball action on Saturday afternoon at Newman Park. The Catawba Indians improve to 3-1, while the Bearcats fall to 6-2.

Bud Lanier staked Lander to a 2-0 lead with a two-out, two-run homer in the second. Hohn answered for Catawba in its second on the first of his two round-trippers. Brett Hohn gave the Indians a 6-3 lead with a three-run homer in the fifth.

Lander rallied with two outs in the eighth to tie the score. A.J. Nunziato singled home one run and Gabe McCann doubled home the tying runs.

Lyerly opened the bottom of the eighth with a double and moved to third on a groundout by Chris Ahearn. After a strikeout, Lyerly scored on a wild pitch with Hatley at the plate for the go-ahead run.

Lander got a runner on in the ninth as Lanier singled with one out, but Nathan Furr got a double play ball to end the game and record the save. Tim Holmes got the win in relief.

Hohn had three this and five RBI to pace the Catawba attack. Lyerly had a pair of hits. Nunziato and Lanier each had two hits for the Bearcats.
