GREENWOOD - Montevallo University's Nathaniel Foster and Arran McCarthy each scored breakaway goals, helping the Falcons hand Lander its first Peach Belt Conference men's soccer loss, 2-1, Saturday afternoon.
Montevallo improved to 9-5-1 overall and 5-3 in the PBC. The Bearcats fell to 8-5-1, 5-1-1.
Foster gave Montevallo a 1-0 lead with 20:45 left in the first half when he beat a Lander defender to the ball for a breakaway, and as Bearcats goalkeeper Matthew Atkinson raced out for the ball, Foster dribbled left and got behind the keeper, scoring from the left side on a shot into the right corner of the net.
But the Bearcats answered just 43 seconds later, with 20:02 left in the half, when Aaron Brittain scored his 10th goal of the season on a header in front of the goal off an assist from Andy Ludewig.
McCarthy, who had just subbed for Foster, gave the Falcons a 2-1 lead with a breakaway goal at the 59:31 mark off an assist from Milan Pualic. This time, Lander was unable to answer despite several opportunities.
The Bearcats out-shot Montevallo 11-7 and had a 9-1 advantage in corner kicks.
