No. 21 Lander, Wingate battle to 2-2 tie in men’s soccer

WINGATE, N.C. - The No. 21-ranked Lander men's soccer team battled to a 2-2 tie against Wingate University in a non-conference contest Sunday afternoon at John R. Martin Field.

Lander moves to 4-1-1 overall, while Wingate is 5-1-1.

The Bearcats took a 1-0 lead at 14:59 on a goal by Craig Hughes, only to have the Bulldogs tie the game at 1-1 on Luke Mulholland's penalty kick with just over one minute remaining in the first half.

Lander regained the lead at the 76:59 when Jamie Ramm headed a pass from David Winskill into the back of the net for a 2-1 lead.

Wingate once again had the answer when Junior Nyemb took a rebound in front of the net and tied the game at 2-2 with just over eight minutes remaining in regulation.

Wingate held a 26-10 advantage in shots, including a 10-4 edge in shots on goal. Wingate goalkeeper Joey Calandra had two saves, while Lander's Bill Hale recorded eight.

Lander will open the Peach Belt Conference portion of its schedule when the Bearcats travel to USC Aiken for a 7 p.m. game on Wednesday.
