GREENWOOD – The Lander baseball team improved to 6-10 overall Wednesday afternoon when the Bearcats defeated Wingate University, 8-2, in a non-conference game in the Rawlings Classic at Legion Field.
Wingate drops to 9-15 on the season.
Freshman Derek Whaley (1-1) picked up his first collegiate win as he struck out one, walked one and allowed three hits in five innings pitched.
Wingate's Cale Rogers (0-5) took the loss as he allowed five runs in five innings pitched.
For Lander Malcolm McLeod went 3-5 with one double, one run scored, one RBI, and two stolen bases. Robert Skinner went 1-3 with two RBI. Brooks Arnette went 1-3 with two RBI and T.J. Guinan went 2-5 with one RBI.
Wingate scored it's two runs on a Heat Weatherford solo home run and a sacrifice fly by Grayson Tanner that scored Kevin Childs.
