No. 15 Francis Marion rallies past Lander in the ninth

FLORENCE, SC – Sophomore outfielder Trent Knight's two-out RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning lifted 15th-ranked Francis Marion University to a 7-6 come-from-behind win over Lander University, Saturday afternoon in Peach Belt Conference baseball action.

FMU improves to 20-7 overall and 7-3 in the PBC with its third straight win, while Lander drops to 10-13 and 2-5.  The two teams will play a doubleheader on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Trailing 6-4 heading into the ninth, Francis Marion scored three runs with two outs.  Pinch-hitter Chris Honeycutt was hit by a pitch to lead off the frame.  Lander starter Daniel Hinchberger then retired the next two batters, but FMU freshman Preston Shuey and senior Bryan Brown followed with back-to-back RBI doubles.  Relief pitcher Brad Hay then walked Camron Asbill and Knight followed with the game-winning hit.

Knight finished the game with three hits, including an RBI triple in the sixth inning.  Both Shuey and Brown had two hits for the Patriots and Keon Graves had a two-run homer.  Senior shortstop Greg Phelps was 0-for-4 and saw his school-record 33-game hitting streak stopped.

Lander leadoff batter Malcolm McLeod was 3-for-5 with an RBI, while Robert Skinner, Brooks Arnette, and Nate Mangiapane all had two hits.  Arnette drove in two runs.

FMU senior Ed Paul (3-1) pitched a scoreless ninth and was the beneficiary of the Patriot rally.  Hinchberger (3-2) held FMU to seven hits with five strikeouts through the first eight innings.

Lander led 2-1 through five innings, but Francis Marion plated three runs in the bottom of the sixth on Knight's triple and Graves' homer.  Lander answered with four runs in the top of the seventh, thanks to run-scoring hits from Skinner and T.J. Guinan and a sacrifice fly by Arnette.
