Armstrong Atlantic downs Bearcats in regular-season finale

GREENWOOD - Corey Johnson scored a game-high 20 points to lead the Armstrong Atlantic State University men's basketball team to a 72-52 Peach Belt Conference victory over Lander in the regular-season finale for both teams Saturday afternoon at Horne Arena.

AASU improves to 17-10 overall and 11-9 in the PBC, while Lander slips to 9-18, 6-14.

Both teams will participate in the Peach Belt Conference tournament March 5-9 at USC Aiken in Aiken, S.C. The brackets will be announced Sunday night.

Houston Wright led Lander with 15 points on 5-of-7 field goals and 4-of-4 free throws. Zach Evans added eight points.

For Armstrong Atlantic, Johnson was 8-of-11 from the field and 3-of-5 from the free throw line. Jamaal Galloway added 17 points, while Patrick Sanou netted 15 points and grabbed eight rebounds.

AASU, which led 30-20 at halftime, connected on 25-of-48 field goals for 52.1 percent, including 9-of-18 three pointers for 50 percent. The Pirates were 13-of-17 from the free throw line for 76.5 percent.

Lander was 18-of-59 from the floor for 30.5 percent, including 4-of-22 from the three-point line for 18.2 percent. The Bearcats made 12-of-21 foul shots for 57.1 percent.

The two teams were tied seven times in the first half -- the final time at 20-20 at the 8:32 mark -- before AASU went on a 10-0 run before halftime.

The Pirates, who outrebounded Lander, 41-31, kept a double-digit advantage the entire second half and built their lead to has high as 22 points at 69-47 with 38 seconds left and 72-50 with 16 seconds left.
