Limestone beats Lander baseball team, 11-5

GREENWOOD – Limestone's Marques Kyles pitched five-plus innings of scoreless relief and the Saints came from behind to beat the Lander Bearcats 11-5 in a non-conference baseball game Wednesday afternoon at Legion Field.

Limestone improved to 8-5 while Lander fell to 3-5.

Kyles relieved Saints starter Michael McAbee in the fourth inning and shut the Bearcats out the rest of the way. Jay Guidry took the loss for Lander.

Lander took a 1-0 lead in the first when Gabe McCann walked, stole second and scored on T.J. Guinan's double down the left-field line.

The Saints tied it in the top of the second when Phillip Soden homered over the 400-foot sign in dead center field.

The Bearcats grabbed a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the second. Brooks Arnette reached on an infield single, A.J. Nunziato singled, and Brian Bender hit a two-run triple over the right fielder's head.

Limestone tied the game again in the top of the third on Matt Still's two-out, two-run single.

Lander regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth, scoring twice to make it 5-3. Arnette reached second when the left fielder dropped his deep fly ball, stopped at third on Nunziato's single to right, and scored when Alex Baur reached on a fielder's choice. Bender moved the runners to second and third with a bunt, and Robert Skinner lifted a sacrifice fly to deep right.

The Saints tied the game at 5 in the top of the fifth, scoring one run when Still reached on an error and another on Kyle Brewer's RBI single.

Limestone grabbed the lead in the sixth after Dylan Anthony walked and A.J.Bsharah was hit by a pitch. The two converted a double steal and both scored on a single by Zach Watkins for a 7-5 lead. Watkins stole second and scored on Josh Izokovic's hit-and-run single to make it 8-5.

Izokovic, Still, and Brewer added RBI singles in the top of the eighth to give the Saints an 11-5 lead.

Brewer, Still, Bsharah, Sodon and Izokovic had two hits apiece for Limestone. Still had three RBI and Bsharah scored four runs. Brewer, Watkins, and Izokovic had two RBIs apiece while Anthony stole two bases.

Leading Lander were Nunziato, 2-for-4 with two runs scored; Arnette, 2-for-3 with two runs, and Bender with a triple and two RBI.
