FLORENCE, S.C. - Gabe McCann belted a two-run home run with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning Sunday afternoon to lead the Lander baseball team to a 12-11 come-from-behind, non-conference victory over Anderson University at the Swamp Fox Challenge, hosted by Francis Marion University.
Lander improves to 3-3 overall, while Anderson falls to 1-6.
Craig Roberson earned the win for Lander in relief as he struck out one in 1.2 innings pitched.
Anderson's B.J. Scarborough took the loss.
McCann went 4-for-5 with one home run, one double, two runs scored and three RBI. Malcolm McLeod went 5-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI; Josh Lovvorn went 3-for-5 with three runs scored and one RBI, Brooks Arnette went 1-for-4 with two runs scored and AJ Nunziato went 1-for-4 with one run.
For Anderson, Blair Carson (2-for-5, four RBI), Matt Hill (1-for-3, one run) and Walt Quattlebaum (2-for-5, two runs, two RBI) all doubled. Patrick West went 3-for-4 with one run and one RBI; and Alex Roberson went 1-for-2 with two runs and one RBI.
Lander outhit the Trojans, 15-12.
Anderson took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third, only to have the Bearcats come back in the bottom of the inning and take a 3-1 advantage. The Trojans regained the lead at 4-3 with three runs in the fourth. The Bearcats tied the game at 4-4 in the fifth, but Anderson bounced back in the sixth with five runs to take a 9-4 lead. Lander trimmed the lead to 9-8 with one run in the sixth and three in the seventh. Anderson scored two more in the eighth to stretch its margin to 11-8.
